Crushing On Velvet | Playing With Autumnal Textures

Luscious … I don’t think there is any better adjective that best describes velvet.

When it comes to all the incredible materials that we dress ourselves in, velvet is often overlooked and a rarity amongst many wardrobes including mine. When I reflect on all the velvet garments I have owned in my life I can count those garments on one hand. All I can remember are velvet dresses as a toddler and more recently a velvet black blazer as a young twenty something.

Velvet I am sorry, I have neglected you.

When I consider why this may be I think velvet in the mind of the modern woman is synonymous with questionable fashion choices of the 1970’s and from that point velvet has clearly been stuck in a rut. But this luscious material deserves a chance and Australian designer Sarah Lloyd is leading the way to change velvet’s reputation. Featured heavily across her new collection by way of tops, jumpsuits and dresses all cut in a timeless black, you will notice how velvet can bring a little razzle dazzle to your everyday ensembles.

Particularly as we descend into cooler months here in the southern hemisphere now is the time to experiment with different textures like velvet and juxtapose it against leathers, denims and more mainstream fabric compositions. Should you be nervous about how to incorporate velvet into your wardrobe opt for something understated like a long sleeve velvet top  as seen here.
