Yes, I know markets don’t really fall under the café umbrella, but good food and coffee is good food and coffee regardless of location. It is often said that food is one of life’s greatest pleasures and personally I feel this is heavily influenced by the social engagement that food brings into our lives. This community spirit and passion for artisan foods can be found at fresh produce markets and attending these events is one of my favourite pastimes no matter where I am in the world. For traveler’s and locals alike they are an irreplaceable opportunity to sample local cuisine but for the matters concerning the soul are an even greater opportunity to support small business owners and farmers.
There are many markets scattered across Sydney all of which boast talented and passionate vendors eager to put their creations out there for the public and one of my long time favourites is the Northside Produce Market just a hop and skip away from Sydney’s Harbour Bridge. Here within what is essentially a concrete jungle you will be transported back to true country living. On offer (to name a few) are artisan cheeses, the freshest homegrown vegetables, the juiciest handpicked fruits, free range organic eggs and a wide range of baked desserts that will make anyone throw the term willpower to the wind.
Allowing yourself to be lost in the aura and aroma of a fresh produce market is what I call the perfect start to any weekend.
