Where to find the best cupcakes in London

Well London here we are again… as I write this I am venturing east on the Piccadilly line and though the spring weather really isn’t on show today all I know is that it’s good to be back in my second home. London put a spell on me as a child and contrary to how these stories typically turn out, it’s a spell I never want broken.

There are many factors which make this city truly exist in a league of its own and upon seeing a couple of London Heathrow bound flights on my September roster with Emirates I knew I wanted to explore something quintessentially British… afternoon tea. Perhaps my sweet tooth is now raging out of control, perhaps I have been watching one too many episodes of The Great British Bake Off or perhaps I simply wanted an excuse to stuff my face in the name of dedicated ‘research.’ Either way finding afternoon tea was on my mind and it was an itch that needed scratching.

Given that high tea can be quite pricey in London Town for tourists to enjoy I am inspired to find the best cupcakeries which are able to still provide the British afternoon tea experience without ruining the budget. Also as a solo traveller cupcakeries/bakeries are more of an intimate experience where one can lose themselves in a good book or simply people watch, unlike high tea which is more of a social event.

The cupcakeries/ bakeries highlighted today are a combination of personal favourites, external recommendations and most importantly are found in some of my favourite areas of central London. So together let’s put on our fat pants and spoil ourselves rotten on sugary goodness because we deserve it!

Situated in my favourite area of London, Convent Garden (fellow and former ballerinas will understand why) is a little place that epitomises what a cupcakery should look and smell like.

Primrose bakery is the prettiest little place that will make you want to give up your day job and get into the baking business. I fell that deeply in love with Primose that I am already planning to undertake one of their weekend cupcake decorating classes on my next London layover.

For the beautiful British brides out there, keep Primose Bakery in mind for your wedding needs as you will find their designs modern, refreshingly simple yet elegant. Most importantly, the quality is superb. Although Primrose promotes new flavours on a daily basis I was eager to keep things simple and sample their vanilla cupcake. As a baking enthusiast myself, vanilla can by strangely difficult to master in terms of density and taste. Primose Bakery did not disappoint as their vanilla cupcakes are pure perfection, particularly when accompanied with their mint tea.

Up until I travelled to the United States I had never heard of let alone tasted red velvet cupcakes. Sad story of pure utter deprivation I know! Since being shown the light I have discovered that a visit to Hummingbird Bakery is not complete without trying their red vervet cupcake creations… it is an American style bakery after all. Oh my gosh I am sitting here salivating thinking about it. With currently six bakeries scattered throughout London my favourites are found in Soho (because who doesn’t adore the West End) and Notting Hill’s famous Portobello Road. In order to bring the authentic taste of the south to each branch, cupcakes are baked fresh daily on each site. The love, southern charm and dedication is apparent with each bite.

Located in the enigmatic and always cheerful Carnaby Street is the quaint little bakery, Crumbs & Doilies that is understated yet charming. As a child I was obsessed with collecting doilies and every time my mother took me out for a cappuccino I found myself stealing as many doilies as possible to be made into skirts for my barbies.

image

Basically, the store name alone was enough to entice me to venture to Kingly Court and the salted caramel cupcakes will keep me coming back forevermore. However, do not be fooled by appearances.

Though the shop front appears small Crumbs & Doilies further specialise in cakes, weddings and corporate events and in addition have an array of mini cupcakes on offer for those looking to indulge with only half the guilt.

With twenty stores scattered across London, you will notice that since its foundation in 2006 Lola’s has become a London icon in itself. With quality cakes on offer made from the finest of ingredients it’s not hard to see why and for an extra special treat be sure to try their cookies and cream milkshake. What I love about Lola’s range is that they cater to a wide dietary demographic and I am not just referring to the flavours on offer. Lola produces cupcakes that are sugar free, wheat free and even have vegan options all which are lovingly referred to as their “free from” range which further extends to their larger cakes.

image

You will find Lola’s typically operates as a stand alone shopfront, therefore your cupcakes will be boxed for a take away service. On those perfect summer days don’t forget to grab one of their coffees and relax in one of the cities many green spaces. Whether you find yourself at London City Airport, Selfridges, Convent Garden or even selected underground tube stations keep an eye out for the iconic baby blue and brown and let Lola’s handcrafted cupcakes lift your spirits and make your day.

They say that Disney Land is the happiest place on earth. I am going to argue that Soho’s Cutter & Squidge is the second happiest place on earth because this adorable little setting is pure magic.

image

Though not quite a cupcakery this blogpost would be incomplete without mentioning Cutter & Squidge, their visually incredible cakes on offer or their exclusive biskies.

Mothers with young daughters this is the place you want to venture too for your afternoon tea moments, I promise you your little one will love the décor and as the cakes are made with as little fat and sugar as possible your cheat day will turn into a treat day. Be quick though because until the September 14 2016 Cutter & Squidge has replaced their Signature Afternoon Tea with their Hello Kitty Afternoon Tea but bookings are essential.

Who doesn’t love afternoon tea? Who doesn’t love cupcakes? Perhaps you silently answered “me” to those questions. Now I am going to contain my shock and judgement and ask that you venture to at least one of these places mentioned above and I guarantee your position will be swayed. When you’ve been busy sight seeing since the wee hours of the morning a sugar rush will keep you moving but forgo the desire to stop into the local convenience shop and make a very British memory of it.
